A song for describing Rome. A song for understanding the soul of Rome. A song that symbolises Rome. Which could we be taking about? One, of course: Rome Capoccia by Antonello Venditti. This is a genuine declaration of love from the singer (born in Rome and most definitely 100% Roman) to his city, describing the wonderful spots you can find during the evening when the sun goes down, creating an atmosphere with few equals. All the Romans know this song and love it. Here are the lyrics:

“Quanto sei bella Roma quann’? sera,
quando la luna se specchia dentro ar fontanone
e le coppiette se ne vanno via,
quanto sei bella Roma quando piove.
Quanto sei bella Roma quann’? er tramonto,
quando l’arancia rosseggia ancora sui sette colli
e le finestre so’ tanti occhi
che te sembrano d? : quanto sei bella!
Ah, quanto sei bella.
Oggi me sembra che er tempo se sia fermato qui.
Vedo la maest? der Colosseo,
vedo la santit? der Cuppolone,
e so’ pi? vivo, e so’ pi? bono, no, nun te lasso mai,
Roma capoccia der monno infame.
Na carrozzella va co’ du’ stranieri,
un robivecchi te chiede un po’ de stracci,
li passeracci so’ usignoli, io ce so’ nato, Roma,
io t’ho scoperta, stamattina.
Oggi me sembra che er tempo se sia fermato qui.
Vedo la maest? der Colosseo,
vedo la santit? der Cuppolone,
e so’ pi? vivo, e so’ pi? bono, no, nun te lasso mai,
Roma capoccia der monno infame.
Roma capoccia der monno infame.”

If, after having had read the lyrics and maybe even listened to the Venditti song, you’ll definitely want to make a trip to Rome to visit the fabulous spots so fondly sang about, so here’s some advice. First, visit a travel blog with good information so that you can make the most of your visit. Just to mention a few musts: the Colosseum, the Basilica di San Pietro, Piazza di Spagna and The Trevi Fountain (in the song the “Fontanone”). Then, once decided what to see (there is so much, you couldn’t possibly see everything, so you certainly have to make a choice….), start organizing the journey and the accommodation. Talking about the trip, the city is well communicated: you can access by train, by car or by plane, landing in one of the two airports of the city (Fiumicino, the biggest, and Ciampino, for low cost cheap flights). To find a place to sleep, make sure to book your apartment (appartamenti Roma) ahead of time or if you prefer another kind of accommodation, have a look for a hotel (Roma hotel). But keep in mind that the apartment (appartamenti Roma) option is perhaps the most comfortable accommodation for the city centre.
